Abellaite
I am pleased to inform you that it has been accepted and recognized as a new mineral species from the Commission onNew Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) the Abellaite NaPb2 (CO3) 2 (OH), the first mineral species new discovery in Catalonia, being the type locality the mine Eureka, in Castell-estaó municipality of La Torre de Cabdella, Pallars Jussà, in the province of Lleida.
The mineral was named in my honour as a discoverer. Joan Abella Creus, a gemmologist with the University of Barcelona
It is a basic lead carbonate and sodium, which is present in crystals and euhedral, subhedral, submillimeter rarely exceed 0,03mm. Grouped forming aggregates and without apparent order in the form of pink, laminar habit and hexagonal colorless and transparent, sometimes white, intense pearly shine glass type, between translucent and opaque, translucent crystals may present iridescence, the crystals are very fragile and friable aggregates is insoluble in water and it is a newmineral training.
A multidisciplinary team of Catalan researchers initially coordinated by Dr. Joan Viñals University of Barcelona (UB) and continued after his untimely and unfortunate death of Dr. Jordi Ibáñez of the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera (ICTJA-CSIC), made by the same Dr. Jordi Ibáñez and Josep J. Elvira, both from the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera (ICTJA-CSIC), Xavier Llovet from the University of Barcelona (UB) and Nuria Oriols from the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC ) have identified and described the physical and chemical properties of mineral, an essential process to certify it as a new species, which has been long and complex. Now researchers are preparing a paper describing the new mineral, which is essential for their full acceptance. The manuscript will be submitted for publication in the European Journal of Mineralogy in the coming months.
The holotype (the sample rate), as part of the new mineral cabbage Collection of the Museum of Natural Sciences (MCNB), with registration number "26350 MGB"
